The 5-to-9 Tension: Building Your Vision While Working a 9-to-5

[HERO] The 5-to-9 Tension: Building Your Vision While Working a 9-to-5

Working 9-5 then coming home to build the vision~ LSBS

It is currently 5:08 PM on a Thursday. If you’re reading this, you already know what that moment feels like. It’s that strange transition where one world ends and another: the one you actually own: is supposed to begin.

For most of the world, 5:00 PM is quitting time. It’s the sound of laptops closing shut, the commute home, and the slow slide into Netflix and chill. But for those of us building a vision, the clock hitting five feels less like the finish line and more like a starter’s pistol on race day.

The tension is real. I’m feeling it right now. It’s the stage of life where I’m pulled into "mom mode" one moment, and the next I have to tell hubby to give me another 20 minutes to wrap up a concept I've been working on, and he has to now wait for me to start the movie we were planning to watch. It can be a mess, but we aren’t just "dabbling." This isn’t a hobby. It’s not some "extra-curricular" activity to pass the time between all the other things life calls me to. This is my future. This is the vision we are architecting for ourselves while we still have to show up and give our best to someone else’s bottom line from 9 to 5.

The Weight of the "Work" Behind the Work

When you’re a high-performing woman, you don’t do anything halfway. You don’t just "start a blog" or "consult on the side." You build with intention. You want it to be great because your name is on it. But that desire for greatness comes with a heavy mental load.

During the day, you’re navigating the corporate landscape, managing teams, hitting deadlines, and being the "Strategic Identity" for your professional title. Then you come home, and the house needs you. The kids need you. Dinner needs to happen. And yet, that vision: that dream of Life Styled by Sparkle or whatever your "it" is: is screaming for your attention in the background.

It’s a unique kind of exhaustion. It’s not just physical; it’s the cognitive load of switching from "Employee/Manager" to "Wife/Mother/Partner" to "Visionary/Founder." If you feel like your brain has too many tabs open and they’re all playing different songs, you are not alone. This is the 5-to-9 tension. It’s the friction that happens when you’re trying to remain aligned in your daily life while being pulled in 50 different directions.

‍ ‍This Isn't a Hobby: It’s the Future

‍I want to pause here and validate something: It is okay to be tired. It is okay to feel the weight of this. We often talk about the "hustle," but we don’t talk enough about the mental grit it takes to keep your vision alive when your 9-to-5 has already drained your battery.

Building something of substance while working a full-time job is an act of courage. It’s the ultimate power move, especially when you’re doing it later in life. You’re not just looking for extra cash; you’re looking for a legacy. You’re looking for a life that is designed and aligned with who you actually are, not just who you were hired to be.

But how do we navigate this without burning out? How do we keep the "home life" from feeling like a chore and the "vision" from feeling like an obligation?

Problem-Solving for the Visionary 9-to-5er

If we’re going to do this: and we are: we have to be strategic. We can’t just "hope" for energy at 6:00 PM. We have to create systems that protect our peace and our progress. Here are three ways I’m currently navigating this tension.

1. Managing "Vision Fatigue"

Vision Fatigue is what happens when the gap between where you are (the 9-to-5) and where you want to be (the Vision) feels too wide to bridge. You want the brand to be perfect. You want the website to be flawless. You want the impact to be immediate. When it doesn’t happen fast enough, you get tired of the dream itself.

The Fix: Stop looking at the mountain and look at the next three feet. Instead of trying to build the entire vision tonight, pick one "needle-mover” daily. Maybe it’s writing one paragraph for the blog post. Maybe it’s choosing one edit for approval instead of all ten things. Excellence is built in the aggregate. Give yourself permission to be "in-progress." Remember that even a soft life requires the hard work of setting boundaries around your own expectations.

2. Creating Transition Rituals

One of the biggest mistakes we make is trying to jump straight from "Corporate You" to "Visionary You" without a buffer. You walk through the door, drop your keys, and immediately hop on the laptop and begin working on the vision “to-do’s,” I’m guilty, I use to do it all the time.

The Fix: You need a bridge. A transition ritual tells your brain that the 9-to-5 identity is taking a backseat and the Visionary identity is stepping up. It can be as simple as:

  • Changing your clothes (Style is identity: get out of the corporate "armor").

  • Take 10 minutes to decompress without your phone (in the bathroom).

  • Lighting a specific candle that only burns when you’re working on your vision.

  • A skincare moment (I’ve shared my favorites here) to literally wash the day off your face.

This ritual resets your nervous system and helps manage the "weight" of home life balance.

3. Finding "Micro-Moments" for Intentional Building

I’ve heard that you need a "four-hour deep work block" to build a business. But if you have a 9-to-5 and a family, those four-hour blocks are as rare as unicorns. If you wait for them, your vision will surely die.

The Fix: Master the micro-moment. What can you do in 15 minutes while the pasta is boiling? What can you voice-note to yourself during your commute? Building with intention means using the small pockets of time to keep the momentum going. Alignment isn’t about having a perfect schedule; it’s about making sure your small actions match your big desires.

The Reality

I’ll be honest with you: some nights, the 9-to-5 wins and I come home, watch YouTube and chill. Some nights, the family wins. Some nights, I’m the woman who needs to just snuggle up and not be "Strategic" for anyone.

And that is okay.

The tension doesn't mean you’re doing it wrong; the tension means you’re growing. You are stretching into a new version of yourself. You are navigating life’s changes with a level of self-awareness that most people never reach.

As we build these visions, we have to remember that the goal isn't just to "reach the end." The goal is to be the woman who was brave enough to start while her life was already full. We are designing our lives with intention, one 5:08 PM at a time.

If you’re feeling the weight today, take a breath. Change your clothes. Light the candle. Your vision is worth the tension.
